The Friend Poster is a fun product product offered by grad student Benjamin Lotan through his new website PrintingFacebook. For $20, you’ll receive a 20 x 40 inch high-quality poster with thumbnails of the profile pictures of all your friends (works best for 200 to 2,200 friends). What’s neat is that the posters are created using a traditional photographic print process:
We use Fuji Crystal Archive photo paper in a RA-4 photochemical process. This means that we use a high-quality professional grade paper with real weight, it will not rip or fold easily. Because we expose your poster on to this paper and develop it in traditional photo chemicals, your print will have a richer image quality than any ink-jet printer process.
This product has been mentioned in quite a few places on the web today, so we’re not exactly sure how Lotan plans to fulfill all the orders, but the website is still accepting orders. Whether or not Facebook sends Lotan a cease-and-desist over the domain name or design that he picked is another story…
Ars Technica published an interesting story today about how photos uploaded to Facebook remain on their servers months — or even years — after they’re “deleted” from the service. We decided to test this out ourselves, uploading the above photo to Facebook, copying the direct URL to the image file, and then deleting both the photo and the album. As you can see from the hotlinked photo above, the image continues to live on as a zombie photo on Facebook’s CDN servers.

Just earlier this year Facebook upped their maximum photo size to 720px, an increase of 20%. Today, they’ve announced that the maximum size is increasing to 2048px, about eight times larger than the previous maximum size. A download link will be included with photos allowing people to download the high resolution versions.

The above photo by Aaron Yeo, titled “Woodwards Collage“, has the honor of being the 5 billionth photograph uploaded to Flickr. According to the blog Media Culpa, Flickr receives about a billion photographs per year, while 2.5 billion photos are uploaded per month to Facebook.
There’s a mind-boggling number of photos being created and uploaded to the Interwebs every day.

Here’s a funny example of a photo-based security feature gone wrong: starting in May, Facebook started doing user verification checks when logging in from an unfamiliar computer in order to make sure it’s actually the account owner logging in. The verification checks are photo-based, and involve correctly naming people you have listed as friends. Unfortunately, the feature will sometimes ask users to correctly name unfamiliar things: people they don’t know very well, dogs, cats, objects, gummy bears, etc…
The above screenshot was taken by Facebook user Eleanor Herman, an author who connects with her readers and who hasn’t been able to correctly identify 5 out of 7 random friends. After failing the test, one must wait an hour before trying again. Herman has been locked out of her account for the past 10 days.

Looks like Facebook’s recent acquisition of Divvyshot was not for naught.
In a post on the Facebook blog yesterday, Divvyshot founder Sam Odio announced that Facebook is adding the same face detection features found in many consumer cameras to its uber-popular Facebook Photos app.
Previously, users had to manually select each face found in a photograph to tag it with a friend’s name, but now the service will automatically select each face and prompt you for the name, streamlining the process and making it much easier for uploaders.
I’m guessing we’ll soon see features added that promote collaboration and pooling together photographs as a group to a shared pool, similar to what Divvyshot offered prior to the acquisition and shutdown.
At the Glastonbury Festival this past weekend, a giant panoramic photograph containing 70,000+ attendees was snapped during the halftime of an England World Cup match. Afterward, the photo was put online and opened up to tagging via Facebook Connect. Since then, over 2,500 faces in the photograph have been tagged, making it (unofficially) the most tagged photo in the world.
