I take lots and lots and lots of photos. I also started by picking the brain of my GF who actually attended a photography school for a little while and by reading a lot of theory online.

I've learned mostly by trial & error. Every time I download my photos, and I take LOTS of them, I'm so thankful that they are digital and I don't have to pay for prints!

What I have learned about photography, I've learned by studying pictures that I judge to be exceptional. I try to see what makes them good and do the same thing.

  • Kvol30

I've learned tons about photography through the contests/lectures at my camera club, practice, and trial and error!

  • Police370

I have been self taught. I stepped away from the point and shoot method and started looking at all the manual settings and what they could do for me. I would study what I considered a good photo looking at the settings they used to achieve the good photo. I might not have been able to get what I wanted at first, but I had an eye for what was good or bad. I also would study any on line information I could find. Then it was pratice, practice and practice, I would shoot the same photo numerous times with different settings and methods. I would look at the results to seewhat wrked best. police370

Because I love taking images that 'speak', i've just practised heaps. I have done some art training, have a reasonable detailed book and taken a few basic digital camera courses and I look forward to every opportunity to better hone my skills.

  • Laderomance

For me the internet has been my greatest teacher. Reading tips from sites like this one, visiting photo storage sites, making contacts with other photography lovers, and sometimes just flat-out Googling a question are what helped me the most.

  • http://www.mfcarter.net Mfcarter2

Ha! Yes, sounds like a great idea.

  • Mary Phillips

Self taught via the my good friend google, some books, trial and error and http://digital-photography-school.com/

  • Phyllis

It has taken me a while to learn all the bells and whistles on my camera, still there is always more to learn and experiment. What was an interest (family photos at holidays) has become a passion and the more I learn, the more I realize I need to know. I learn from rss feeds from excellent photographers, a few books on line and off, visiting photography shows and simply taking lots and lots of photos. Still it is frustrating not to capture exactly what I see in my minds eye as there is so much beauty in this world that I wish to share. People say I have an 'eye', lovely to hear, but the learning must continue. Like any art form, it is an evolving process.

My dad taught me a little bit when he bought me my first film SLR after I graduated from high school. I also had the opportunity to take a couple of photography classes here and there. Currently, I'm just a casual photographer and pick up things from friends, tips I find online as well as trial and error.

  • http://www.loganmiller.org Logan Miller

I learn almost exclusively through the internet anymore. A few books here and there, but there is such a wealth of knowledge online, it's hard not to learn.

  • http://twitter.com/Oglerock Sara Oglestone

I've been doing a little bit of everything trial and error, blogs/websites, books (bought and library) and talking to friends who are photographers. The one thing I haven't done yet is take a course.

  • puzzled

I'm self taught except for a photoshop (3? 4?) course I took a long time ago as a technical editor. Would always like to learn more!

  • Juan Gallardo

Practice and reading tutorials on the internet.

  • http://one-eye-media.com Whaleburger

    I like free stuff

  • Ecmcgowan

Getting as much knowledge as I can grasp at any free moment. I work full time in RETAIL (retail slave) and hope to one day in the far future be able to support myself on my photography alone…but it's a learning process everyday. I learn something new from others everyday and from myself when I pick up my camera…it's a challenge that I truly adore….

  • http://twitter.com/vomviersen kathi

Trial and error, and error, and error. I'm glad we're in the digital age. Film might have bankrupted me!

  • http://twitter.com/tomebug Peg

I have been learning through books, classes with the local learning annex, and with a supportive and fun group of friends who love photography as much as I do and who are willing and happy to share their knowledge. I also belong to 5 different local Meetup.com groups, all photography related, where we get together to shoot, photowalk, hold classes, shoot some more, and share our work with each other.

And I play with my camera. I try new things, I get some great shots and I get some lousy shots and I get better all the time. I love it!

  • Javier

A NYIP course will be a great price. I have learned reading so many blogs and tutorials, but a structural course should be excelent
