When you see the rig the lens was originally mounted on, it seems pretty obvious that it was used for things such as long-range viewing of missile tests, and the like. Obviously built for the military.

“Can you think of any other examples of where this focal length could be useful?” Why would I even consider bothering my brain to think of another reason when you gave us the best reason to get it: “spying on someone across a city” IMAGINE THE ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES, especially that I have a Canon APS-C sensor camera!!!
