Since you don&#039;t really want the glass in there, it&#039;d be easier to not have it in at all. Just remove the glass prior to energizing the bulb. This can be done by squeezing the base of the glass with pliers while inside a plastic bag. If done carefully, the glass will shatter leaving the elements intact. In this state, the element will burn out quickly if given full power, but will last a while if you put a dimmer switch on it and just use partial power.
