What Kind of Photographer Are You?
Last week we asked you how long you spend on post-processing. Here are the results:
How much time do you spend post-processing a typical photograph?
- 0 (6 Votes)
- 0-10 minutes (181 Votes)
- 10-20 minutes (104 Votes)
- 20-30 minutes (41 Votes)
- 30-40 minutes (28 Votes)
- 40-60 minutes (12 Votes)
- 1-2 hours (17 Votes)
- 2+ hours (14 Votes)
Total Voters: 403
Seems like most of you at least do a tiny bit of digital editing or tweaking before publishing your work somewhere.
This week, the poll has to do with what kind of photographer you identify yourself as. Have you been photographing for a long time but casually and just for documenting life? Are you receiving a formal education in photography? Are you serious about photography as an art, but don’t make a living on it? Or, do you do photography as a living?
What kind of photographer are you?
- Casual (57 Votes)
- Beginner (74 Votes)
- Student (50 Votes)
- Serious Amateur (339 Votes)
- Professional (73 Votes)
Total Voters: 593
As always, feel free to share more details with us by leaving a comment!

seems as though quantity may be more important than quality these days. Sad.
Are you referring to the results of the post-processing poll?
I think this poll is interesting. I think the barriers between “serious amateur” and “professional photographer” are breaking. It'd be interesting to find out what those that selected the “professional” radio button mean: are they the ones that are sustaining a living with photography? Or is it those that own professional gear and consider that they can take and/or deliver professional images?
I am hesitant to put myself in any category listed above. Sure, others can put a label for me, but I think the bigger question to answer is this: Why do I photograph?
In fact, I (try to) answer questions such as “What is a photographer?” and “Why do I photograph?” in my recent blog post titled “Worthy of Exploration”, which Petapixel readers may enjoy (link).
I definitely think a healthy discussion can definitely evolve from this poll and/or questions I raised in my blog post.
I'm half way between beginner and serious amatuer, but not a student. Shoot on a used 5D
I would have to agree with Muu. I don't really fit in any categories. I'm sure I know more than a beginner but not as much as a serious amateur. I read photography sites and blogs for more knowledge but I'm not getting formal education. Would love to vote but simply cannot.
