Hi-Yah! Killing Noise With Noise Ninja

Update: This giveaway is now over. The winners were randomly selected and announced here. Thanks to everyone who participated!

One of the tools I occasionally bust out during post-processing is Noise Ninja, a noise-reduction program/plugin used by seven of the ten largest newspapers in the United States.

Take this photograph I took yesterday as an example:

before

Though I was shooting outdoors with plenty of light, I had accidentally left my ISO set at 1600. This caused the photograph to end up looking dirty and full of noise. In addition, I underexposed the photo, giving it even more noise after correcting the exposure during post-processing.

You can hover over the above image to see the image after using Noise Ninja on it.

Don’t see much of a difference? Maybe a crop of a smaller area of the frame will help you see what Noise Ninja does (hover over this before image to see the after image):

beforec

Neat, huh? The amount of noise in the photo was significantly reduced, even before tweaking and selectively editing the image. For some more before-and-after examples, visit the gallery on the PictureCode website.

I’m giving away three (3) Noise Ninja Pro Bundle licenses, each worth $79.95. These bundles include the Photoshop plugin, the Aperture plugin, and the standalone program. All you need to do to enter this giveaway is answer the following question:

If you could turn into any animal, which animal would you choose?

There’s two ways you can tell us your answer, and feel free to use both ways:

  1. Leave a comment on this post (at PetaPixel.com)
  2. Tweet your answer, and include this link somewhere in the tweet:

    http://bit.ly/ptpxnn

The tweet doesn’t even need to be @petapixel. As long as the link is somewhere in the tweet, our friendly little giveaway bot will find it.

This giveaway will end next Tuesday morning, on August 25th, 2009. We’ll be picking the winner randomly using random.org. As usual, in addition to the winner we’ll post some of the more creative or interesting responses we receive.

Good luck!

PictureCode is not (currently) a sponsor of PetaPixel. They were simply nice enough to provide us with these licenses for us to give away to you, our awesome readers.

Update: Just learned that I had accidentally posted the deadline as September 1st, or a week later than I intended. Fixed it to read August 25th. Thanks for catching this @scottnopants!

I think I would want to be a bird, so that I could fly. Preferably a large one, like an eagle, so that nothing else would eat me. I could really use that Noise Ninja, I goof on ISO and exposure frequently.

If I could turn into any animal (bird actually) it would be an Eagle. Soaring high, seeing the world from the Eagles vantage point. Then there is the fact that they are powerful, graceful, beautiful creatures!

  • Burns!

I'd be a dog. It would be all about naps in the sun, belly rubs, and someone else brings the food.

I would be a polar bear. If you ever seen a pack of polar bears walking on endless plain of snow, you will realize how truly elegant their white fur is.

We were at the zoo yesterday pondering this very question! I will go with orangutan. First, I would just plotz if I didn't have opposable thumbs. Second, as orangutans are endangered, I'd likely be in a zoo, where my needs would be tended to, and my intelligence would be respected by my keepers.

  • K Ladislaw

    Wolf

  • Neely Beattie

I would turn into MY cat. That way, I could do whatever I wanted (like sit on top of the dryer and sit on the furniture even though I'm not suppose to), whenever I wanted (like stay out until 1 in the morning worrying my owner sick, even though I was only underneath the neighbors deck) and be spoiled to no end (even though I don't deserve it.)

    :)

Basically, I am going to be an Albatross, so that I can fly to Antarctica while carrying my DSLR, so I can take some photos of the penguins (while still being an albatross). You'd get some nice bird's-eye-view photos too.

  • Jen Barnes

I'd be a cat so I could totally have an attitude and get away with it.

  • patrickrhill

    I wanna be a bear

Even though it is common knowledge that the lifespan is not very long at all, I would like to be a common 'house fly.' Yeah, I have to whole 'flying' thing going, but I am also small as a 'fly on the wall.'

  • mouring

Amur Leopard … Nothing is more beautiful.

  • http://ivoryhut.wordpress.com/ ivoryhut

I'd be a panda bear and pinch my own cheeks all day. I'd have to figure out how to work a camera remote, though, for all those pictures I'll be wanting to take of myself. Before I go extinct.

  • http://www.hyperyote.com/ Kurst

Obviously a coyote after all coyotes are geniuses and you know who doesn't want to be a genius.

  • benji

    Meerkat! I wanna be a meerkat! :)

  • ShebaJo

I'd be a polar bear, so I could smack the #$@% uh… some sense into SaraPalin, freak out others that don't respect animals. ;)

  • Michael Marks

Snow Leopard. After reading “The Now Leopard” by Peter Matthiessen the animal acquired an almost mythical quality. Once I was able to see a pair…It's a beautiful elusive animal.

  • Stefan

A falcon – great views from above, and no more troubles with the visual acuity ;)

  • Kristine

I wanted to pick something original, but obviously it has to be a cat. Just lying around having my tummy scratched all day, and answer to noone. Brilliant.

  • Susanne

I'd like to be cat or a falcon. As a cat you can lie around, having fun and your personnel is always waiting with some food or some games.
And as a flacon you'd have a great view from above. And the exiting speed… wow.

  • Bea

I'd like to be MY cat too – cat nap when/where I want without being disturbed, food on demand, treats on demand, get away with absolutely anything as long as I put on the “puss-in-boots” look and then being told how cute I am… that's the life :)

  • Seetroll

I want to be my cat. But flying is an option I wold like to have, too. So I vote for: SUPERCAT.

  • JohnnyStone

hm… I would like to be a Tiger, Although I have to agree with Seetroll: Wings are a must-have. Also, I like Ninjas… hm…

So I would most definitely be a Mutant Ninja Tiger… With Wings! :)

Hey! Its a real animal! I see them all the time at my office! :D

  • http://twitter.com/dacphoto Dan Connolly

    I'd be an elephant. Awesome.

  • idesignstuff

I'm going to go with a Scottish Terrier. Ours has a pretty good life, and tons of attitude, but also exhibits unconditional love, which is a trait that I aspire to and fail at.

I was glad to see that some one picked Liger.
