How Much Have You Spent on Photography?

Here are the results of last week’s poll regarding the camera mode you use most often:

Which camera mode do you use the most?

  • Automatic (18 Votes)
  • Program (P) (57 Votes)
  • Aperture Priority (A or AV) (244 Votes)
  • Shutter Priority (S or TV) (17 Votes)
  • Fully Manual (107 Votes)

Total Voters: 442

The results aren’t very surprising, and roughly correspond to how much I use each of the modes as well.

This week I’m wondering how much money you’ve spent on your camera gear and photography in general. This includes things like prints, matting/framing, film, etc… Since you might not have detailed records of all your purchases, just give your best guess. The amounts are in US dollars.

How much money have you spent on photography?

  • Less than $200 (9 Votes)
  • $200-500 (7 Votes)
  • $500-$1000 (41 Votes)
  • $1000-2000 (68 Votes)
  • $2000-$4000 (84 Votes)
  • $4000-10000 (96 Votes)
  • More than $10000 (51 Votes)

Total Voters: 356

Okay – trying this again: Most expensive photographic purchase so far is a tie: my Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM, and Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM lenses. The credit card cried a lot, but both are so worth every penny!

I haven't done photography for that long, but when you include gas costs for taking all those photo tours around the country the amount spent rises quickly. Especially in Sweden with these high prices.

well, the 5DMkII is quite expensive, at least for my pocket… and 1 dslr + 1 slr (with 1 lens each) been robbed, this also costs (not only money)

actually, the most money i spent was years ago on a Nikon D70 with an extra lens and a flash and such, cost me well over 3 grand… right now the DSLR i use is a Canon Rebel XSi with a kit lens, i think it was less than 2 grand canadian, i would have noticed if it was over two grand… but i also have several other cameras lol

Too bad that “Far more than my wife knows about” isn't an option :)

  6. Haha. Yeah forgot to include that one ;-)

I spent about $3,600 on my Nikon D1H in 2002. I finally sold it last winter for about $400.

it is a never ending process. SLR, DSLR (two, and in a process to get a third one although used to converted into infrared camera), lenses, flash, memory card, p&s camera, batteries, filters, photobags, tripod, monopod etc, etc, etc…. it's not a cheap hobby, but it is a great one.

If I were to say “how much have I *personally* spent?”, then I'd probably be in the $200-$500 range… However, considering as my wife bought me my 20D as a surprise, and she doesn't have a job and it came from my pockets anyways, that puts me in the $500-$1000 range…

Or, in other words, not nearly enough.

Most expensive purchase: 20D… Second most… My old Finepix S5100… Third most? My Canon 50mm f/1.8. it was $50. lulz.

Best score? That's totally different. A Polaris flash meter at Ritz when they were going out of business… Normally about $300 or so, apparently… Got it for $40. :D

The XSi was my biggest purchase($630 kit new), but the Tamron 28-7 f/2.8($450 new) was a close second. With that setup and the 430EXII, I kind of laugh to myself when I think of the @2 dog collars I'm using to extend my neckstrap. Hanging $1200 by a pair of $2 collars…
