I buy almost exclusively used. I live in a fairly small, art oriented college town. When students need to sell something to pay a bill or at the end of the semester, camera stuff is often sold for ridiculous prices.
I've bought a Nikon SB-800 like new for $200, a Nikon 105mm 2.8 AF-D lens for $150, and just a few days ago purchased a Gitzo tripod with Manfrotto pro ball head for $45. Craigslist and the local pawn shops around here are awesome.
I've bought pretty much all my photo gear used… First ever digicam was new (bday gift), replacement for that (it was stolen out of my house) was used, film cameras used, my 20D used, my two lenses, used… Only things new I have are my cheap underpowered Phoenix flash, my CaseLogic bag, 16GB CF card, and, uh… that's about it. lulz.
The more used cameras and the more low-level you buy the more you cameras you will have. About 30 in my case, some lent to friends and all cams are second hand.
10 is a lot? I think I'm approaching 30 or so. Yes, I have a problem. I think only about three of them were bought new.
